Deep Creek Canyon Bridges

The project consisted of replacement of replacing seven bridges along highway 12 in deep creek canyon.  Due to the remote nature of the road and lack of available detours the bridges were constructed using accelerated bridge construction (ABC) techniques.  Each bridge was constructed in a period of 72 hours over a weekend when the road was completely shut down.  The ABC construction required innovative foundation approaches.  These included pre-constructing drilled shaft foundations as well as driving steel pile at night.  Each of the foundations were designed in a way to allow for their construction weeks before the weekend road closure.  Additionally our geotechnical field investigation was performed at night due to width restrictions on the roadway during daylight hours.  Several of the structures were constructed in summer 2014 and the remaining bridges are planned for 2015.
